St. Stephen’s High School held its opening ceremony for the 2022-23 Intramural Competition in its high school gymnasium on Monday, February 6th. The event was organized by the school’s hardworking Committee on Student Activities(CSA). It was the first intramural competition since the onset of the pandemic.
The event opened with a regal parade of the competing players and batch officers, led by the Scout Honor Guard. Each batch chose its colorful jerseys for the competition. Sean Monzon and Julianna Malaluan served as Masters of Ceremony. The opening prayer was offered by Jazlean Malaluan. Elisha Monzon led the assembly in singing the national anthem. The school song was led by Anika Wong.
Mr. Jim Belton, School Development Director gave the opening remarks. He grounded the theology of the competition in the first and second chapters of Genesis. In these passages, God established the physical realm as good. He resolved the first Biblical dilemma through personal human relationships. “In the first 2 chapters of the Bible, God imbued this day with profound meaning, joy, and inexpressible beauty.”
After the ceremony, the tenth and twelfth grades faced off in the first game of the tournament. Mr. Joseph Gayares served as the spirited announcer of the game, rousing the crowd to ever-higher heights of enthusiasm. The tenth grade triumphed over the twelfth 57-42. During the second game, the eleventh grade defeated the ninth grade 76-29. Grade seven overcame grade eight 51-34.
The intramurals are being organized by Joel Ke and Jaredson Choa under the guidance of Mrs. Lilan Chua, Head of the High School Office of Student Affairs.
“This activity is emblematic of our commitment to educate the whole child, mind, body, and heart in community,” said Mrs. Chua. “Sports and physical fitness are an important part of a Stephenian education. Intramural competitions also help the students bond as a batch. These relationships can help Stephenians throughout their lives.”
