Specific Objectives

Instill in the minds of our students love and service to God, family, people, and country

Recognize and develop each child’s unique gifts

Develop in each child spiritual and moral values and character

Equip each child with skills in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies

Prepare each child for secondary education

Programs

To realize these goals, the Department has implemented:

Enhanced English Curriculum

  • Adoption of Abeka English textbooks to improve student’s exposure to literature and grammar
  • An emphasis on phonics, reading, grammar, and composition
  • Adoption of the Research Writing Program that improves student’s skills beginning in the first grade

Enhanced Math Program

  • We are one of the best schools in Manila to study math. Our students win national and international competitions such as the International Mathematical Olympiad, the Mathirang Mathibay, and the Sipnayan.
  • Starting in the third grade, students who excel in math can join our special math program.

Chinese Program

Chinese is now one of the two most influential languages in the world. Every year, more and more research, engineering, commerce, and diplomacy are being done in Mandarin. Students with these language skills will have greater opportunities in our ever-changing world.

  • Because Mandarin is not commonly spoken in the streets of Manila, St. Stephen’s High School teaches Chinese as a second language. This method best meets the needs of language learners living in the Philippines.
  • Our teaching methods focus on the practical acquisition of the language as opposed to rote memorization of progressively obscure vocabulary.
  • Students apply their skills through extensive listening and speaking exercises.
  • Students are encouraged to love the language by reading imaginative stories and through creative writing.
  • Students are taught to appreciate and understand traditional Chinese culture and values.
  • Because we use traditional characters, our students can read the widest variety of Chinese texts, including historical documents and literary works written before the 20th century. Students are also introduced to simplified characters.
