The new Student Center for St. Stephen’s High School is well on the way to completion and will soon become one of the most beautiful educational buildings in Manila. Its unique and modern design will dramatically enhance the learning environment at the school.
Students are invited into the structure through a wide, terraced walkway. Every facet of the edifice is designed to welcome students to an area where they can collaborate and express themselves. Expansive spaces are provided where young Stephenians can gather together to work on class projects and exchange ideas.
Rooms are also set aside for student organizations. The Student Center will be a wonderful boost to the arts. Separate areas are created for individual and group practices which will accommodate piano, guitar, violin, singing, dancing, acting, and other lessons. The Student Center will also boast a beautiful rooftop room, with the sky serving as its ceiling.
The Student Center was designed by St. Stephen’s alumnus, Architect Patrick Andrew Tanhuanco. The creativity that he has brought to the project is a testament to his love for his alma mater and his commitment to improving the educational experience of Stephenians for many years to come. Architect Tanhuanco is part of a long tradition of talented designers who have come out of St. Stephen’s. He received the 3rd highest score in the architectural board exams the year he took it.
The project was funded by the generous donations of the school’s alumni through the Centennial Fund.
“This Student Center beautifully signifies our educational philosophy of educating the whole child: mind, body, and heart in community,” said Principal, Dr. Judy Go Tan. “It encourages community by giving the students an inviting space where they can discuss ideas and work on assignments together.”
“I am very excited about how the Student Center is going to enhance the way we think about education,” commented School Development Director, Mr. Jim Belton. “We acquire the first steps to knowledge in the classroom. We then learn to apply that knowledge in the workplace. The collaborative spaces will provide a wonderful training ground for the practical skills our students will use in their future careers.”
