Junior High School Department

St. Stephen’s High School is committed to educating the whole child: mind, body, and heart in community. We deliver quality education based on biblical principles.

Specific Objectives

Instill in the minds of our students love and service to God, family, and country

Help students understand the relationship between themselves and their environment so that they can adapt to a changing society and community

Recognize and develop each child’s unique gifts

Develop in each child spiritual and moral values and character

Equip each child with skills in English, Filipino, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies

Prepare each child for senior high school

Programs

To realize these goals, the Department has implemented:

Junior High School Enhanced English Curriculum

Enhanced English Curriculum

  • Progressive adoption of Abeka English textbooks to improve student’s exposure to literature and grammar
  • An emphasis on reading, composition, and the practical application of the language
  • Adoption of the Research Writing Program which improves student’s skills on all grade levels
  • Students perform English language drills using IXL. This program gives an immediate response with each answer, congratulating the student, or urging him to try again. If the child’s answer is wrong, an explanation of the correct answer will be given.

Enhanced Math Program

  • We are one of the best schools in Manila to study math. Our students win national and international competitions such as the International Mathematical Olympiad, the Australian Mathematics Competition, the Mathirang Mathibay, and the Sipnayan.
  • Gifted students can take advantage of our special math program with an accelerated curriculum. Students with standard math abilities participate in a rigorous program that maximizes mathematical mastery.
  • Students perform math drills using IXL. The program gives an immediate response with each answer, congratulating the student, or urging him to try again. If the child’s answer is wrong, an explanation of the correct answer will be given.

Enhanced Science Program

  • Progressive adoption of Abeka science textbooks to master the scientific method and critical thinking
  • Students work in specialized biology, chemistry, computer, physics, and robotics labs. They regularly apply scientific laws and theories through scientific experimentation.
  • Students build machines they design in robotics class using advanced 3D printers

Chinese Program

Chinese is now one of the two most influential languages in the world. Every year, more and more research, engineering, commerce, and diplomacy are being done in Mandarin. Students with these language skills will have greater opportunities in our ever-changing world.

  • Because Mandarin is not commonly spoken in the streets of Manila, St. Stephen’s High School teaches Chinese as a second language. This method best meets the needs of language learners living in the Philippines.
  • Our teaching methods focus on practical acquisition of the language as opposed to rote memorization of progressively obscure vocabulary.
  • Students apply their skills through extensive listening and speaking exercises.
  • Students are encouraged to love the language by reading imaginative stories and through creative writing.
  • Students are taught to appreciate and understand traditional Chinese culture and values.
  • Because we teach traditional characters, our students can read the widest variety of Chinese texts, including historical documents and literary works written before the 20th century. Students are also introduced to simplified characters.

Extra-curricular Activities

To build future leaders for our church, country, and community, we offer a wide variety of activities:

Sports: God created us to enjoy His creation in the physical realm. We take every opportunity to allow our students to excel in sports. Because of the pandemic and quarantine, not all all of our sports teams have been able to compete. However, they have all continued to meet and train on a weekly basis.

Boys and girls may participate in the following sports: badminton, basketball, chess, swimming, table tennis, track and field, and volleyball.

The Committee on Student Activities (CSA) develops and trains future leaders for our community and country and coordinates student clubs and organizations, including:

  • Batch officer elections
  • Intramural sports
  • Annual Sportsfest
  • Annual mini-fair
  • Maintenance outreach
  • Numerous academic and service organizations

Field trips are an important part of a holistic education. This year, in response to the pandemic and quarantine, our administrators are planning a virtual field trip.
